Van Gogh

                                       Van Gogh

Imitationalism and literal qualities

This painting is very authentic because Van Gogh made this self-portrait in 1887. In my opinion Van Gogh specialized in realism because almost all or all of his paintings were realistic (made to look Real), for example Van Gogh made a composition called “Crows over Cornfield” and it looks exactly like real crows flying over real cornfields, just like Van Gogh’s Self-portrait with his straw hat looks just like him which makes it very representational. I think this piece of art has literal quality because the message in this painting could be saying or showing that he is depressed, or lonely. This picture has precise design because it captures every small detail like the colour in his hair or his eyes because Van Gogh made it look like he really focused on the colour in his eyes and showed the true features of his beard and the brush strokes adds that exact bit of detail it needs. I would say it is very life like because it looks just like him. This painting looks so real its almost as if he is sitting right in front of me.

Formalism and Design

This piece of art successfully shows formalism and design. The elements I see that were included here were Value, Texture, Line, Colour, Shape, Form, Unity, Balance, Contrast, and Pattern.
The different colour of paint in certain colours creates some value, the brush strokes make it look bumpy and slightly rough, you can see the lines from the brush, which was on purpose because that is Van Gogh’s style, there is multiple colours through out this painting such as orang, yellow, black, green, brown, white, etc., there is shape because his hat is a shape his eyes are circles etc., there is positive and negative space, the positive space is Van Gogh and the negative is the background, I would say there is form because this painting is 2D but it looks like a 3D picture, I think it is balanced because the brush strokes complement the colours, I think there is contrast because in some areas the colour really stands out, I think the little lines create a pattern amongst this painting.

Emotionalism and Expressive Qualities

I think this piece would fail in Emotionalism because you cant exactly get a feeling from this artwork, in my opinion its just a plane Jane piece of art work (the phrase “Plane Jane” just means its boring) who wants to say that about a piece or work? Certainly NOT me!

me as an animal

I have chosen to represent my self as a giraffe because I am tall, I am skinny, my favorite colour is yellow even though giraffes are brown, and everyone says they are yellow, because from far away they look slightly yellow. Giraffes are also really fast and I love running, and I also find Giraffes to be calm, like me.

line project

 Line/Rhythm Project

(Dynamic)                                                                                        (Steady)
My steady and dynamic pictures work in different ways because in my steady picture i put thick lines, thin lines, proportion ,and its all diagonal, and its not crazy and all over the place, unlike my dynamic picture it has thick, thin and curved lines but i made the lines go in many directions, some are virticle, some are horrisontal, and some are diagonnally curved. My steady picture is simple and easy, My dynamic picture is difficult and crazy. When i made these pictures my thought process was different for each picture, for the steady picture i was like "this should be easy" for the dynamic picture, all i kept thinking was " how am i gonna do this" but then after playing around with some of the adobe illustrator tools, it became much simpler.
When you ask the question "Does it work?" i don't exactly understand what that means but if i were to take a guess of what that meant i would assume it means does it look like a steady picture and a dynamic picture, and i would have to say yes it looks like a steady and dynamic picture because like i said before my steady picture is calm and neat and also seems kinda boring, like it should. My dynamic picture looks crazy, out of control, and slightly messy, so if thats what that question means by "Does it work?" thats what i would have to say.

If i were to say which one of my picture works better i would say my dynamic picture works better because in my opinion its looks and is better then the steady one, it flows better, its crazier and stands out alot compared to the steady one.
I dont think both my pictures are pleasing to the eye/eyes because my steady picture is really boring and people aren't going to want to look at something dull, i think people would rather look at something amazing and out there like my dynamic picture. If i were to put my pictures side by side which one would people look at the most, my dynamic picture, because it stands out to the eye, it looks kinda cool and you can see it asmany different things, for example i see it as warped piano keys, i also see it as tiger strips or sound waves or claw holes from an animal, you all may see different things from what i see, but thats why i think it works better.
For the next question i dont know how to answer it because i dont understand it and what it is asking me so therefore i will skip it.
My pictures make me think of all sorts of things like why does it look the ways it looks or why did i draw this. it makes me think of certain objects like a piano or animals, my dynamic picture even makes me think of the movie "labrinth" because in the movie its a giant maze and my dynamic picture reminds me of a giant and impossible maze. My steady picture reminds me of a whake-a-mole game because the black thick lines make it look like the holes where the mole would pop out.

Well thats my Line/Rhythm

profile pic

I took this picture and made it as my profile picture because i didn't want to show my face and i found this idea cool when i thought of it. I like this picture because when i look at this picture i feel at peace, and i feel calm and happy and it looks like i am looking out upon something peaceful. I didn't change anything about this picture because at the time i didn't know how to use adobe illustrator and there was nothing that i wanted to change about it.
